Kathleen Antonelli, a pioneer in the computer world as well as a pioneering woman, passed away this week at the age of 85.
Mrs. Antonelli graduated from Chestnut Hill College in 1942. A few weeks later she answered a newspaper ad for women with math majors and took a government position calculating artillery shell trajectories. Later, she was among those selected to program and operate ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) at the University of Pennsylvania. The computer had been developed by J. Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly.

I am in the market for a new Dell laptop. A Dell because I think they are probably the best computer manufacturer out there when it comes to reliability, speed, build quality and service. So, if you see a smoking deal on a new Dell laptop, please let me know about it.

Just as many apple diehards are turning in their graves, the first Intel processor -based laptops from Apple are kicking tail on the consumer market. It seems that cooler heads have prevailed at Apple computer and they have realized that they should spend more time refining their UI rather than working on hardware. Intel has been making high powered, mobile CPUs for many years and that is one of their core competencies. Apple on the other hand is not known for their powerful processing abilities, rather they are known for their easy to use user interfaces. I guess somebody finally realized that.
Apple Computer‘s first Intel-based notebooks have long been highly regarded for their thoughtful designs and leading-edge features. But, when it comes to performance, recent models have been lagging behind competitors that run Intel Corp.’s chips. Unable to beat ‘em, Apple last year announced plans last year to join’em. It recently began shipping its first Intel-based laptop, the MacBook Pro, which looks a lot like the old PowerBook G4 line it’s replacing. Like the iMac desktop that also got a silicon brain transplant, the new notebook is fast, with decent battery life. Also like the old PowerBooks, it includes some very nice touches, such as an impressively bright screen, stylish aluminum body, a video camera built into the display’s frame, a keyboard that lights up in a dark room, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transmitters. The initial MacBooks, all with a 15.4-inch widescreen displays, start at $1,999, for a 1.83 gigahertz Core Duo microprocessor, 512 megabytes of memory and an 80 gigabyte hard drive.

I have to say, WordPress really does have one of the coolest communities behind it. The WordPress cool factor prompted me to release a couple of themes that I developed last year. The first three-column theme I built is pretty lame, but it helped me to learn how WordPress does things. Since then I have built many themes for WP and now I will be releasing the Bloggerpro theme you see on this site. I just have to package it up and make sure all of the plugins I reference in the theme are removed. But, the reason I started writing this was that I received an email from a guy who was using my Adsense Ready theme. He was trying to make some mods to it and I have probably spent an hour helping him today…but, I don’t mind. For some reason, I really like to help people get started with WordPress and/or anything I have made for it. I guess I like to help people in general, but mostly people that are simply having trouble with something after they have tried a number of times to get it to do what they want. If you have not already, you should check out WordPress. You can even get a free, hosted blog from them now at WordPress.com.

Well, next time you are working for a Judge and you decide that you want to strong arm some people, you may want to think twice. Of course, nothing has been proven at this point, but the guy can’t be too pumped he just got his computer confiscated.
The Miami-Dade state attorney’s office on Wednesday seized a courthouse computer used by Juan F. D’Arce Jr., judicial assistant to County Judge Ivan Hernandez. D’Arce, 34, who has a side consulting business called Pericles International Enterprises, is under investigation for allegedly doing private political consulting on court time, and using heavy-handed tactics to solicit clients. He has denied any wrongdoing.

I have been trying to teach myself to program in three languages at the same time…actually four. In true IG style, I have not succeeded at any one very well. The thing that seems to be giving me the most grief are associative arrays. Rather, getting all of the information back out of the arrays once they are given to me. I was thinking that maybe it is time for me to take a class as it might be a better environment for me to learn in rather than sitting in front of dual 19″ LCDs, a keyboard and a few books. Any suggestions?

So, what is the best thing to spend your time on? Content? Links? A 50/50 mix? Well, with the advances and popularity that blogging is receiving, I think the answer is content…again. Content has been, and I think will always be, king. Creating great content today will bring in more links that it probably would have in the past. Why? Blogging affords people, rather authors, the ability to expose many more people to their content. People who have the ability to and are willing to, link to your website. Plus, there are many feed aggregation sites out there that are willing to link to you if you create enough quality content. So, what are you waiting for?

I have been using the Technorati Tag plugin for WordPress for the past year and it has worked pretty well. But, today after I updated this dev blog to WordPress 2.0, I found the mother of all Tag Plugings called the Ultimate Tag Warrior. How did I find it? Well, the maker of the original Technorati Tagging plugin has a message about it at the top of the page for his plugin. It looks very nice and super robust for a tagging plugin. More than that, it uses the tagyu.com API to suggest tags for you…if you want. That is P I M P.
For users of the B. O’Neill plugin, this thing will import your tags. Swiz.
